Sitaram Bagh Temple, also known as Dattatreya Temple, is a 200-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Rama and his wife Sita. It’s listed as a heritage place by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

The temple complex spans an area of 25 acres with many more temples and airy courtyards in the Mangalhat suburb of Hyderabad. It also has a goshala, a ved pathshala and living quarters. An old step-well and a huge bathing area, too, are part of the complex.

The temple has been built in a combination of North and South Indian styles of architecture mixed with European style. It, therefore, along with its entrance and courtyards, is a treat to the eyes and soul.

History of Sitaram Bagh Temple Mangalhat

The main temple was built in 1833 during the reign of the Qutb Shahis. It was built by Puranmal Ganeriwala, who worked as a banker for the Nizams of Hyderabad. A few domed houses were also built in the latter half of the 19th century, in the memory of Puranmal and his son Premsukh Dasji.

The temple complex is still managed by members of the Ganeriwal family.

Architecture of Sitaram Bagh Temple

Sitaram Bagh Dattatreya Temple has three gateways in three directions. The main gate is in Mangalhat. A 20 feet high wall surrounds the temple complex, making it appear as if it were a fort.

The entrance is similar to that of a South Indian temple architecture design, with a beautiful gopuram resting on two walls. But unlike other temples in Hyderabad, Sitaram Bagh Temple doesn’t follow the usual style.

You have to walk past three courtyards to reach the main sanctum sanctorum. It is a blend of Mughal and Rajasthani style of architecture. An influence of European architecture can also be seen. And the idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita are carved out of marbles brought from Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Then, the Varadarajaswamy shrine, in another courtyard, is built in the Dravidian architecture style prevalent in South India.

Things to do at Sitaram Bagh Temple

Visit the main sanctum sanctorum of Sitaram Bagh Temple to get blessings from Lord Rama and Sita. Afterwards, pay a visit to Varadarajaswamy shrine. The shrines of Lord Shiva, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Hanuman are also in this temple complex.

Living quarters and the step-well are the other points of interest in the Seetharam Bagh Temple. Chariots, drums and other items used during festivals are also found scattered around in the temple complex.

Sitaram Bagh Temple Timings and Entry Fee

The temple is open throughout the year, and you can visit it on any day you want. The visiting timings are 6 AM to 11 AM and 4 PM to 8 PM, with a free entry for everyone.

Also, Sitaram Bagh Temple is a lesser-known temple. It doesn’t get crowded on most of the days. So, it should take only an hour to explore the temple complex.

Best time to visit Sitaram Bagh Temple

Sitaram Bagh Temple is best to visit during the winter months, from November to February. The weather is pleasant and the temperature is not so high to cause any discomfort. Visit early in the morning to explore all the parts of the complex and witness the rituals carried out throughout the day.

However, if you want to be a part of festive celebrations at Sitaram Bagh Temple, visit it during Ram Navami. It is celebrated around March-April every year to mark the birth of Lord Rama. Priests carry out special rituals on this day.
