Keesaragutta Temple is located in the Keesara village. Also called Ramalingeshwara Swamy Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his companions Bhavani and Siva Durga. Situated on the top of a hill in the Rangareddy district, this temple attracts a huge number of devotees every day. Also known for its architectural importance, this temple is an ideal place to visit for a weekend trip from Hyderabad.
According to legends, Lord Rama, after killing the demon Ravana came here to free himself for sins of killing a Brahmin and ardent Lord Shiva follower. He selected the valley to install Shiva Lingam. For this, he then sent Hanuman to get a Shivalingam for Varanasi. However, Hanuman was late in bringing the lingam. As the auspicious hour for installing the lingam came near, Lord Shiva appeared before Lord Ram, presenting him with a lingam for the same purpose. This is the reason why the temple is also known with the name of Swayambhu Linga as well as Ramalingeswara, as Lord himself installed the Lord Shiva lingam.
Legend further says that later when Hanuman returned from Varanasi with different 101 lingams for the lord to choose from, he was saddened with the fact that the lingam brought by him weren’t installed. In his agitation, he threw all the lingam on the ground. Many lingams are still found scattered around the temple.
In order to calm Hanuman, Lord Rama said that Hunuman will be worshipped first here at the temple. He also named the hill where the temple was located at kesarigiri originating from the Hanuman, who is also called as the son of Kesari. However, with time, the name of area became Keesaragutta from Kesarigiri.
Timings at Keesaragutta Temple for morning pooja starts from 6 am, while the last pooja of the day is performed is from 7 - 7.30 pm. Located about 35 km from Hyderabad, Keesaragutta Temple is well connected via road. The route to the temple can be taken through the ECIL ‘X’ Road. There are many regular buses from the city as well from Secunderabad, Imliban bus station and even Jubilee Bus Station. It is a different experience altogether if you happen to visit during the festivals of Sri Rama Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Mahashivratri, Shiva kalyanam and Ramalingheshwara Brahmotsavam. It is the best time to visit during these festivals as the fervour and the dedication of devotees on these days add on to the overall charm of this temple.
There is Hartitha Hotel by Telangana Tourism at Keesaragutta, which offers the facilities of accommodation as well as restaurant to the visitors.
Along with Keesaragutta Temple, there are many prominent temples located here as well. One such temple is Laxmi Narasimha Temple which was built during the Qutub Shahi Dynasty.
