Enjoying an ideal location in the center of the city, Peddamma Gudi Temple is one of the most popular religious shrines of Hyderabad. Said to be more than 150 years old, this temple took its present shape in the year of 1993 when the Rajagopuram was built. Its structural beauty and religious importance attracts hundreds of devotees every day, making it one of a prominent place to visit on your Hyderabad City tour.

Peddamma Temple is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi who is shown sitting on a lion (Simha vahanam) called as Santhan Laxmi. The name Peddamma is derived from two words ‘pedda’ and ‘amma’, which means mother of mothers, denoting the Goddess.

History / Story of Peddamma Temple, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad

There are many legends / stories stating the origin of Peddamma Temple. According to one legend, Goddess, after putting an end to the demon, had come to quench her thirst at the well located at this place. A shepherd later spotted an idol of the goddess at the same place where now the temple stands.

According to another legend, a demon named Mahishasur who was the son of demon king Rambha and water buffalo, had dethroned Indra, the king of Heavens. He had the blessings of Lord Brahma that neither man nor can God kill him, owing to which he had became increasingly vindictive. To end his cruelties, upon the request of other Gods and blessings of the holy Trinity- Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga came into being. Goddess with great might along with the powers from Trinity and other Gods, killed demon Mahishasura in a fierce battle.

Festivals at Peddamma temple, Hyderabad

Peddamma Temple is also famous for various festivals during which devotees from various parts of the state visit to seek blessings. Bonalu Festival that is celebrated in the month of June-July is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm in this temple. During this festival, women carry earthen pot covered with neem leaves along with turmeric and kumkum, containing items such as rice, jaggery, milk and curd. These earthen pots are carried as an offering to the Goddess. Rathotsavam that is organized on Ratha Saptami is another major festival of Peddamma Gudi Temple.

Opening & Closing Timings of Peddamma Temple, Hyderabad

Peddamma Temple timings are from 6 AM to 1 PM. Like other temples, it also closes in afternoon and then opens again for darshan at 3 PM and closes at 8 PM.

Reaching Peddamma Temple, Hyderabad

Located on the Road no 55 of Jubilee Hills, this temple is easily accessible via all modes of transportation. There are many regular buses that run via this temple along with a few direct buses as well from Secunderabad and MGBS Bus Stop. Peddamma temple is around 13 km away from Secunderabad railway station while from MGBS bus stop it is around 14 km away. You can take auto rickshaw and even cabs to the temple.
